A Famed Mountain Hut Falls Victim to Warming

Heat Hurts Historic Hut

A 100-year-old cultural heritage site in Canada will be demolished later this year because it now poses a safety risk to mountaineers. The culprit? Climate change.

Abbot Pass Hut is a rustic cabin located nearly 10,000 feet above sea level on the border of Alberta and British Columbia in Canada’s Rocky Mountains. The hut was constructed by Swiss mountaineers in 1922 and for nearly a century was used as a refuge by mountain climbers scaling the challenging peaks that rise around it. The stone building was listed as a national historic site in 1992 and is the second-highest permanent structure in Canada.

The hut will be taken down this summer, but Kolesch said that Parks Canada was able to capture 3D images of the shelter in the summer of 2021 to be used to digitally preserve it in the future.

It is unfortunate to witness the destruction of a century-old cultural heritage site located in the Canadian Rockies due to the impact of climate change.

It's really sad to see historic sites like the Abbot Pass Hut succumb to the effects of climate change. Digital preservation through 3D imaging is a valuable way to ensure that at least the memory of these places lives on. Climate change is affecting not just the environment but also our cultural heritage. I think people should be more attentive to this subject and start taking actions...
