In late spring of 2008 young Nick Toledo made it as far as backpacker’s camp at the base of the dome. Just seven years old at the time of this 8-mile hike, he set up camp with his parents Chuck and Tracy Toledo and older brother C.J. and the following day — he waited. Older brother C.J. would be the first of the two youngsters to take on the task of hiking Half Dome with dad Chuck and uncle, Johnny McDonnell.

I had no idea there was a backpacker's camp at the base of the dome.
(read this as sarcastically as you like)

Congratulations to the young boy.

I noticed that. Perhaps they were speaking of Little Yosemite Valley?

Sure. That is what I thought the writer was talking about...

Technically you can camp nearly anywhere below the sub-dome and above the JMT/HD trail junction.
So all of that is a "backpackers" camp. That's what I was poking fun at.

There is a place you can camp below the stairs on the granite area below the Half Dome cables. It's at the edge of the forest. But the nearest water is from a spring a mile down the trail. Not my favorite place.

Oh great, just what we need....another "egocentric" hiker to Half Dome!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. I can't remember who first called those of us who like to stand on the top of Half Dome "egocentric", but this topic reminded me of that.)

Not really newsworthy...probably the writer knows the kids' parents.

It was a feature piece, Vince. Features are not news.

I've written quite a few features. But they still need to be news.

Well, they used to be, back when stories were printed on an actual printing press.

No, they don't, Pinky.
