Hwy 108

What is driving on 108 like? Is it like driving on 120 Tioga Rd? Better? Worse? Fast? Slow? I'm thinking of driving from Oakland to Death Valley in early April. I thought it might be more fun to go over 108 and down 395 on the Eastern side of the Sierras rather than drive all the way south on 5 and then come back up north. Not exactly a Yosemite question, but hey, maybe some Yosemite visitors would like to know about 108, too, especially in winter!

Which way would you go if you were me (a camper, hiker, backpacker, mountain & nature lover)?

Google maps says to take 120 to get to Bishop... we know that won't work in April because it will still be closed!

I'd say 108 is mostly better. But it does get narrow with sharp curves in the area of the pass.

That probably won't work with 108 either.

Really? I must have mistakenly thought it was open all winter. ewps.

Highway 108 is a great scenic road (goes over the Sonora Pass) however it may not be open any sooner than Highway 120. Highway 88 is another route that is somewhat scenic but may have some slow spots due to maintenance. It's plowed during the winter.

Hwy 108 is a great road. Since it's closer to where I live than Yosemite I go up there often during the summer. I doubt it will be open until sometime in May though. Especially with the late season storms that keep coming through.
