Mote offers reward for missing robot, Waldo
By Billy Cox
SARASOTA - Anyone reporting a yellow submarine while partying on Sarasota Bay this Labor Day weekend will not automatically be cited for DUI. Instead, the finder might get a check for $500.
Baffled scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory have lost a bright yellow, 6-foot-long, $100,000 submersible robot with wings somewhere in the Gulf waters off Venice. Even worse, its name is Waldo. And yes -- not even the communications satellites it speaks to know where Waldo is.
"When we first named him, we never thought we'd have to ask that question," Dr. Gary Kirkpatrick, a Mote marine biologist, said on Friday while referring to the well-known "Where's Waldo?" cartoon....

New giant rat species discovered
Measuring 82 centimeters (32.2 inches) from nose to tail and weighing around 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds), the species is thought to be one of the largest rats ever to be found.
The discovery was made by a team from the BBC Natural History Unit inside the crater of Mount Bosavi -- an extinct volcano in the Southern Highlands province of Papua New Guinea.
"This is one of the world's largest rats. It's a true rat, the same kind you find in the city sewers," said Kristofer Helgen, a biologist from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, who was part of the expedition team.
