Research has confirmed a 500-mile-deep magma plume under Yellowstone is slowly obliterating mountains in its path as it travels an inch a year to the northeast.

I got a kick out of movement of the Earth's mantle referred to as the "mantle wind".

The article doesn't really explain why the plume would consume mountains. If it produced surface eruptions, I would expect it to produce mountains as subsurface material is released at the crust. Perhaps it "melts" underlying rock structure and undermines the mountain structure or prevents upthrusting of rock strata.

So whenever the caldera erupts, is it known as "Breaking wind"?

That Mantle, such an uncouth geologic feature...tongue sticking out smiley
