SHOSHONE, Calif. -- Sarah Craighead has been part of the National Park Service for 30 years, and Friday evening the trajectory of her career led her to the Shoshone Museum to discuss her ideas and concerns about her latest position -- superintendent of Death Valley National Park. She came to Death Valley from Saguaro National Park in southern Arizona and said she prefers the heat to the winter cold in, say, the country's more northerly parks. This winter has been odd in some respects, however, with, she said, "water covering the whole valley from one side to the other ... roads have washed out every week or two." But some of the stimulus money created in Washington, D.C., has reached Death Valley, and several projects are under way. Also, fee revenue from the entrance kiosks is being used in a variety of ways.
