(At least this one was easy to walk around.)

We did a very short hike at Russian Gulch (Mendocino) a couple of years ago, where the trail appears to have been let-go for several years. I haven't had to scramble over, under and along so many trees or physically push my way through such thick vegetation before. It was an adventure. Made the paved trails in the rest of the park seem boring.

Sadly, all pictures of our adventure were lost in the epic server crash of 2008.

I was going to post this trail as probably the most deadfall laden in the park. Any guesses as to which trail it is?

wish i had taken some photos of the "trail" to kibbie from the Eleanor side...barely maintained nowadays. Even ran into a ranger who seemed lost lol

Can't remember name - is it one on the south side of Hetch Hetchy? I remember passing through something like that on my way back from Smith Peak several years ago.

More obscure than that.

The "unmaintained trail" that follows the Old Tioga Road route between the Yosemite Creek Campground and the Porcupine Flat Campground is also a fun hike that is in the process of being extensively reclaimed by Mother Nature.

Pretty sure we posted some pix of that trail b4 too.
My opinion on these trails... if the park service has decided that
they are not going to maintain them anymore they should take
them off the big park map they give to visitors.

One of my favorite memories... is coming in to McGee Lake and
the trail crew is sweeping the trail of pine needles...

This is where the switchbacks are... so... you pretty much want to
go straight up the rocks at this point until you see the rock wall
still standing for one of the switchbacks. once you're on that
rock wall then it's pretty much due east from there... at least that
is more or less what I recall.

But the emotional cost of slipping on the snow is much less than that of slipping on the poop. And this particular snow picture doesn't look especially steep, reducing the physical cost.

You completely missed sawn logs. In most of Yosemite they're how you can easily find the trail when it's covered in snow.

And we 110% disagree on cairns. And your picture shows why we hate them. What you need a cairn for on North Dome?
Myself, like many rangers out there (we've asked) kick every one we see over and scatter the rocks.
Can't tell you how many we've seen on trammeled trails.... or along a stream...

You're right Bill....those sawn logs are a key part of trail finding in the snow!

And I know what you mean about cairns. They are often unnecessary and almost always over done on normal trails. But I like to think some of them, like the blazes on trees, have been around for a long time...and mark a path used by those who came long before me.

I wholeheartedly agree with removing unnecessary cairns (as we call them here in New England) particularly in the Sierra where you can plot a fanciful course almost as far as the eye can see. But...in the White Mountains of NH, they can be a godsend at elevation when you can't see 10 feet in front of your face because the cloud deck has obscured the trail. Many a time have I thanked those yellow rock capped cairns along the Gulfside crossing the Presidentials.
