A Gig Harbor woman was attacked by a black bear Sunday morning while walking her dog.
The attack occurred at 8:40 a.m. in the 7300 block of 78th Avenue Northwest. The area is mostly residential but surrounded by wooded areas.
The woman's dog was not on a leash and chased after the bear when they encountered it.
"When she went to retrieve the dog, she got between the dog and the bear, and the bear attacked," said Capt. Dan Brinson of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Another woman walking in the area found the victim and called 911, said Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ed Troyer.
The woman, who is reportedly alert and in good spirits, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.
She suffered a severe bite to her arm and several bite marks to the back of her body. The dog survived.
