The National Park Service plans to conduct a prescribed burn in the Mariposa Grove to help propagate the growth of Giant Sequoias and promote ecosystem health. The burn will be located in the Mariposa Grove, in the southern area of Yosemite National Park. The area to be burned is 47 acres. This is the remaining portion of the unit, of which the previous section was burned in August 2003. Weather and air quality conditions permitting, this burn is scheduled to for Wednesday, October 15th, 2003.
The main goals of this burn are to reduce hazard fuels in the grove while maintaining the restored conditions that were achieved during burns in 1988, and 1999. Fire also prepares the open, sunny seedbed needed for giant sequoias to germinate. In addition to these benefits, fire helps by providing heat to help release seeds from their serotinous cones. Prescribed fire is used to simulate the effects of a natural lightning-caused fire.
Park staff will monitor smoke on a consistent basis and attempt to minimize impacts throughout the grove. However, smoke may accumulate in the Mariposa Grove and nearby communities of Wawona and Fish Camp. Smoke is typically more abundant at night and during the early morning hours.
You are advised to take precautions to minimize smoke impacts to health. If you have respiratory problems please use caution when exerting yourself in smoky areas. Close windows and stay indoors to avoid smoke inhalation if necessary.
