The man who drowned after jumping in the Cheakamus River to try to save his girlfriend who had fallen into the fast-moving water is being remembered as a valiant hero.
Justin Chan, 34, and his girlfriend, Amy Wong, were fly fishing in “ankle-deep” water in the river near Whistler on Saturday, Aug. 6, when Wong fell into the water after hooking a fish.
... On the fatal day, the two victims were on a guided fishing tour. Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair said after they were swept away the guide followed them until the area became impassable on foot and then called 911. A helicopter and two rescue kayakers were dispatched to the scene.
