Anybody been to Sierra Point lately? If so, how is the old trail doing?

Not since last May, but I imagine the trail is about the same.

It should be nice with all the falls big; maybe next week I'll be able to fit in a visit.

I put a link to that page on the Wikipedia article. Thanks!

I was there in January - before the major snowfalls. It was slightly snowy, but otherwise easy enough to navigate. I expect to visit again in a couple of weeks, hopefully with some new recruits :-)

I just learned something new today. Most of you probably have already seen this.

Yosemite Valley Place Names (1955) by Richard J. Hartesveldt says that: "SIERRA POINT was named in honor of the Sierra Club by Charles A. Bailey in 1897. He had searched for a point from which the five waterfalls (Upper and Lower Yosemite, Illilouette, Vernal and Nevada) could be seen. It was first plotted by triangulation. Impressed by the view, he thought it appropriate to name it in honor of the mountaineering club."

FYI, a great source for such information is the book "California Place Names; The Origin and Etymology of Current Geographical Names" by Erwin G. Gudde, University of California Press. The ISBN is 0-520-21316-5.

This is a standard reference that can be found in all California public libraries. Haven't checked lately, but I think that the last revised edition is the 4th, which appeared in 1998. I bought a new copy several years ago from Amazon.
