Any suggestions, personal experiences, as to how to go about enjoying this phenom? (I just announced to boyfriend from "big country with attitude" that we would be making a trip in Feb)

Just look for clear weather that lasts until sunset. In February, that's a little unpredictable, but not so unusual.

To find viewing areas, the picnic area by El Cap on the east side is OK. Basically, just look for a mass of photographers, look where their cameras are pointed, and that's where it will be if it happens 8^).

There are viewing points along Southside drive also. When you get in an area where you can see El Cap and the 3 brothers, look for a place where there's no place to park because there are too many cars. Then look for the photographers. and tripods...you can't miss them.

It's another fun thing to see, though obviously not something to get a unique photo of.

here are my personal one's that i took .

last year, the roads were being fixed throughout the valley, so the road you normally would use to get an up close photo, was next to impossible. this year it's open (thank goodness).

the first time i went there (about 5 yrs ago i guess), was awesome. i parked my car and ran to the forest about 100 yards where everyone was (if you aren't told where to go, you probably won't find it). there were about 40 people there that day, all with expensive, nice cameras!! all i had at the time was a piece of crap pocket camera. lolol surprisingly though, i got a pretty good photo.

right when the sun was about to shine on the fall, it got totally silent, almost reverant , like you were in church or something.. then all of a sudden, all you could hear were the clicks of the cameras. people come from all around the world just to get lucky to do this..

if i remember right, there is only a 4-5 day window in which this happens, and you just have to be lucky enough to be there on the right day, so far, i've been lucky 3 times.

it lasts for about 3 mins is all, so you have to be ready. it is an awesome thing to witness.

Thank you SO much for sharing, Forrest; the pix are otherworldly. It looks like lava pouring down the side of a volcano!

(btw, the photo labeled "Lower Yosemite Falls - February 15, 2008" has a fine picture of roy g. biv in it)

I get the same feeling about this phenom as I do about Aurora Borealis and Total Eclipse of the Sun (I chased halfway around the world once, so to stand on the deck of a friends boat and experience pitch dark in the middle of the day -- folks were struck silent then, too)

I am really enjoying these pix and information; I appreciate all the experience shared.

About what time of day does this happen?

Just before sunset as the sun shines through the air pollution in the Central Valley and the filtered light hits the waterfall on the EAST side of El Capitan.

where do the day trippers park? (if you dont have a campsite, etc., to dump the car)

as you're driving towards El Capitan (way before it) you'll should see a turn out / parking lot area right off the main road (on your right side of the road.

it's too hard for me to explain exactly where it is, but you should see a number of cars parked there (that is the give away).... once you park there, you walk about 100 yards toward the mountain (walk like in a 2 o'clock direction from the parking lot).

you should see and hear people once you're up there.
