Hikers are generally advised that the weight of the packs they carry should correspond to their own size, with smaller individuals carrying lighter loads. Although petite backpackers might appreciate the excuse to hand off heavier gear to the larger members of the group, it turns out that they may not need the help.

Very interesting, as I have been trying to find out pack size and weights of gear in order to start buying new gear.
I didn't have time to open the study, but I wish the piece would have had some numbers in it to quantify, rather than making us guess what " smaller individuals" and "lighter loads" mean.

Well the author included a graph in the paper which has numbers on the axes in Newtons (1 Newton = ~0.225 lbs.).
