On our last trip... one afternoon before dinner, a 4-5’ long rattler calmly went through our camp. He* was super relaxed and moving slow checking things out, until we got within a certain distance. Then he started to coil his neck and look back and rattle. We back off, he straightens out and continues checking around for prey or whatever it was he was searching for. Eventually he left our camp. He had been on a pretty straight trajectory from the spot on the river we had been getting water (!) to the trail. Right through the middle of camp!

He was beautiful and we respected his space (While still trying to get a few pics and videos) and he left us be.

*i say he. I have no idea if it was a he or she, but I don’t think of them as “it”

Had one on the Snow Creek trail near the bottom once. My boot came down an inch or two in front of his head. He rattled; I teleported.

Ha! I have seen about twenty rattlers in the Sierra, but never had one rattle....last one was in the Mokelumne Wilderness..proceeding exactly as JKW describes.
