Camino de Santiago -- Completed!
July 23, 2023 05:32AM
I leave tomorrow morning for Spain, to hike a version of this with my daughter who currently lives in Switzerland. If you are interested in following our progress, I'll going to try to post it all on our website blog. Here's the first entry: https://www.backpackthesierra.com/post/camino-de-santiago

I should be back just in time to teach my first class in the middle of August...if all goes according to plan. I'd love to hear comments and suggestions...

Two days to go: after 273km, we've only got 47 to go on the Camino Primitivo de Santiago with my daughter. And a birthday on the way!

We are finished! We limped into Santiago amid hugs and celebrations. A wonderful adventure with a amazing daughter: https://www.backpackthesierra.com/post/day-fifteen-almost-a-disaster-and-santiago-and-the-field-of-stars

Sounds like a great trip. Wonderful that you could do this with your daughter...and finish, despite your body telling you to quit!

Yeah, although I think we did it to ourselves. We were so used to hiking in relative peace on the Camino Primitivo that we upped the pace a bit to get through the crows of the Camino Frances. And I think that extra effort put extra strain on what had been a fairly sustainable process. I know we hiked those last two days (except for the last two miles) at something like 3.5 miles an hour, a good half-mile an hour faster than we'd done the rest of the Camino. Admittedly, the earlier stages had been more rugged, and slowed us down. But hiking on pavement, as we did for the last couple of days, is no picnic either.

Still, we finished, we got our cute little certificates from the bishop, and we have an adventure that we can remember for the rest of our lives.

All good!
