In the comment section, the general advice is to play dead for grizzlies but fight back for black bears.

The person who posted this seems to have a pretty level-headed response to the whole situation, but I did love this line in his comments:

I always have a bear bell,but I mute it when descending rocks because it is noisy.

I don't think there are Grizzly bears in Japan.

There are two types of bears in Japan. The Asiatic Black bear (Ursus thibetanus). They usually but not always have a light crescent moon shape marking on their chest. They are known to be aggressive towards humans. Japan also has a brown bear called Ussuri brown bears or Ezo brown bears ((Ursus arctos lasiotus)) which are distant relatives to the grizzly bears in North America. They are some of the larger of the brown bears in the world and some are the size of Kodiak Brown bears who are the largest brown bears. Some of these brown bears can be completely black. In the video, it is hard to get a really good look at the bear, so I am not sure which species it is but my best guess, which could be completely wrong, is that it is a black bear.
