...UNSETTLED AND WET WEATHER POSSIBLE OVER THE AREA MONDAY THROUGH
WEDNESDAY...

A TRANSITION TO A MORE UNSETTLED WEATHER PATTERN IS EXPECTED ON
MONDAY AND TUESDAY. A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO APPROACH
THE WEST COAST FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA ON MONDAY. THIS SYSTEM IS
LIKELY TO BRING COOLER TEMPERATURES AND POSSIBLY SOME SIGNIFICANT
PRECIPITATION DUE TO EMBEDDED MOISTURE FROM THE REMNANTS OF
RECENT SUPER TYPHOON MELOR APPROACHING CENTRAL AND NORTHERN
CALIFORNIA.

BEST CHANCES OF PRECIPITATION WILL BE OVER THE NORTHERN HALF OF
THE FORECAST AREA...INCLUDING MUCH OF THE CENTRAL SAN JOAQUIN
VALLEY...THE SIERRA NEVADA...AND THE SURROUNDING FOOTHILLS MAINLY
NORTH OF TULARE COUNTY. THE BULK OF THE PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY
OCCUR MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT WITH LINGERING SHOWERS ON
WEDNESDAY. IMPACTS FROM THIS RAINFALL COULD INCLUDE URBAN AND
SMALL STREAM FLOODING WHERE HEAVIEST AMOUNTS OCCUR.

THIS SYSTEM WILL REMAIN FAIRLY WARM WITH SNOW LEVELS EXPECTED TO
REMAIN HIGH...MAINLY ABOVE 8000 FEET. WINDS FOR MONDAY THROUGH
WEDNESDAY ARE EXPECTED TO BE BREEZY WITH THIS SYSTEM...ALTHOUGH
THERE COULD BE STRONG WINDS OVER THE SIERRA NEVADA CREST.

.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...THE LATEST GFS MODEL SHOWS A RATHER
IMPRESSIVE STORM AFFECTING A LARGE SWATH OF THE WEST COAST BY
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY...AND DEPENDING ON INTER-OFFICE
COORDINATION...WOULD EXPECT TO INCREASE THE POPS FOR THIS PERIOD BY
THIS AFTERNOON. MAIN FOCUS OF THE FORECAST OCCURS DURING THE
EXTENDED PERIOD WHEN A LARGE TROUGH INTERACTS WITH A MOIST PLUME TO
BRING THE FIRST SIGNIFICANT CHANCE OF RAIN FOR THE SEASON.
DEFINITELY SOME REAL POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT RAIN ON THE ORDER OF
1 TO 2 INCHES...HOWEVER THE STORM IS STILL 4 TO 6 DAYS AWAY AND
THERE IS A BIT OF UNCERTAINTY YET. WILL HAVE TO WATCH FOR EFFECTS ON
THE BURN AREAS. SKIES WILL CLEAR OUT BY THURSDAY.

...HEAVY RAIN AND POTENTIALLY HIGH WINDS EXPECTED TO ACCOMPANY
A SIGNIFICANT STORM EXPECTED LATE MONDAY INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY...

A POTENT STORM SYSTEM...ESPECIALLY FOR OCTOBER...WILL MOVE
INTO CENTRAL AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BEGINNING LATE MONDAY AND
CONTINUING INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY. THIS WILL BE A VERY DRAMATIC
CHANGE FROM THE TYPICAL LATE SUMMER PATTERN THE AREA HAS BEEN
EXPERIENCING. THE ORIGINS OF THIS STORM STEM FROM A WESTERN
PACIFIC TYPHOON NAMED MELOR THAT AFFECTED JAPAN LAST WEEK.

LIGHT RAIN COULD BEGIN MONDAY AFTERNOON. RAIN AND WIND WILL
INCREASE MONDAY NIGHT. TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT SHOULD SEE THE
HEAVIEST RAINFALL AND THE STRONGEST WINDS. RAINFALL AMOUNTS COULD
REACH 1 TO 3 INCHES ALONG THE COAST AND IN THE VALLEYS. IN THE
HILLS...RAINFALL AMOUNTS COULD RANGE FROM 3 TO 6 INCHES. LOCAL
AMOUNTS UP TO 8 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE SANTA CRUZ AND SANTA
LUCIA RANGE. WINDS TUESDAY AND TUESDAY NIGHT WILL INCREASE TO 20
TO 40 MPH ALONG THE COAST AND IN THE HILLS. GUSTS TO 60 MPH ARE
POSSIBLE IN THESE AREAS. STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS MAY DEVELOP IN THE
NORTHERN SALINAS VALLEY AND SOUTHERN SANTA CLARA VALLEYS WITH THIS
STORM.

RAIN AND WIND WILL DECREASE WEDNESDAY AS THE STORM SYSTEM MOVES
TO THE EAST.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM THIS STORM SYSTEM INCLUDE:

* POSSIBLE MUD AND DEBRIS FLOWS IN THE BURN SCAR AREAS FROM LAST
SUMMER AND THIS SUMMER. PERSONS LIVING NEAR THESE AREAS SHOULD
PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO UPDATED FORECASTS.
* URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOODING AND PONDING ON ROADWAYS AND UNDERPASSES.
* HIGH WINDS THAT CAN DOWN TREES AND THUS POWER LINES PRODUCING POWER
OUTAGES.
* HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS DUE TO VERY SLIPPERY ROAD CONDITIONS
FROM A BUILDUP OF OIL OVER THE SUMMER AND DEBRIS SUCH AS LEAVES
ACCUMULATING ON THE ROADS.

THIS IS A POTENTIALLY SERIOUS DEVELOPING WEATHER SITUATION. LOOK
FOR MORE DETAILED STATEMENTS TO BE ISSUED AS THE STORM GETS
CLOSER. CONTINUOUS WEATHER INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE FROM THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ON NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR FROM THE
INTERNET AT: HTTP://WEATHER.GOV/SANFRANCISCO.

Anyone know of the origin of "hunker down"

Possibly from Old Norse huka, which means to squat.
