The hikers were not equipped for the cold weather, according to the sheriff’s department.

Sort of a confused reverse sequence story. I suspect the fall was a more significant factor than the cold.

In packing for yesterday's relatively short dayhike up to 9000+, I was thinking about not just the weather for the day (which turned out to have plenty of frozen puddles and frozen ground), but the "what if" weather for an overnighter -- any hike, no matter how short, can turn into an overnighter! (and just about all winter hikes turn into "night hikes"winking smiley
