Authorities are searching for a Fremont couple who are several days overdue from a camping trip, police said today.

Ryan Barrett, 31, and his girlfriend Viola Liu, 31, left Saturday with their three dogs to go camping, possibly in the Sierra, and were to have returned Monday night, said Fremont police Detective Bill Veter...

And not exactly in the Sierra.

Well, since they didn't leave a coherent trip plan with anyone, who knows where they were? A UFO could have picked them up from the Sierra and put them down in Lake County....

I know there are some hot threads on other boards on this topic, but, in this particular instance, what should they have done/taken?
In other words, how could a S&R effort be avoided?

Trip plan?
10 essentials?
Cell Phone?
Sat-phone?
SPOT?
EPIRB?

Move to the top of the list?

It does seem to be something that's all too often left out by the people that need rescuing.

high clearance four wheel drive?

Hopefully, on future trips, they will take "a lesson well learned" instead of just pretending it wasn't their fault?

How did the relatives just happen to know to look near Clear Lake? Seems like crucial bits of information are missing from the reporting.

I heard something about their relatives being able to access their credit card records to see where they'd been. Having to go through too many hoops to get credit card records was one of the reasons why the Kim saga got off on the wrong track. They weren't sure where to look.

I think they might have mentioned to their relatives that Lake County was a possibility.
