I shall remain skeptical. For HD to sit there, without all the surrounding features, makes no sense. I'd guess that it's a local hill that at certain times of day, depending on the weather, looks like HD.

Many were skeptical (including myself). If you want the original thread to chew on:

There seems to be no mention about the ability/inability to see the El Capitan trail in the links (or any mention of its anniversary):

Ha! Tony Imoos's pictures got me hooked, and I spent hours working and identifying the peaks and related information around his pictures.

Here's a link to the wpsmb thread on the topic: Half Dome view from Denair CA

Here's the picture I worked up:

Click on it to see the full size picture.

And on 4/4/09 I posted this in the thread:
Yesterday I had the opportunity to stop by the camera site, to see what I could see. While it was nearly clear enough, there were clouds in the Yosemite area so I didn't see the famous view. But I was impressed with this: That picture is phenomenal! I held out my arm as far as possible, and using my thumb, tried to measure the width of the view. Note the first picture above. I could see the grain elevator and the roof of that big shed to its right. They look tiny -- the ARE a mile and a half away. And my thumb HID THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THAT PICTURE!!! -- from grain elevator to entire width of the shed's roof.

Everyone,
I have been to that exact site and have video zoom shots that go from about 25MM to about 1100MM. You can see Half Dome from that silo site. Period, end of story, stick a fork in it, quit whipping it.

Bear in mind these stills are captured video frames and a 12Mpixel still camera like Tony used. By the way he was there on the first day I tried to get some footage but Yosemite was full of clouds. I went back the next day and HD and EL Cap were visible.

UH-oh....you guys are gonna get Old Dude all stirred up and he's gonna come after you with that fork (watch out Chick-on, he might pause for supper along the way!!!)

Thanks for posting that labeled photo, Steve! And yes, Wayne Pyle did a a computer mock-up of the while line-up, and it is absolutely possible to see Half Dome from Patterson, Turlock ,and other local valley areas on a clear day. The line of sight is perfectly lined up with the opening in Yosemite Valley.

FF thanks for ressurecting this photo -- It's one of my favorites!
