...COOLER AND WET WEATHER TO RETURN MONDAY...

ANOTHER PACIFIC LOW PRESSURE AREA WILL MOVE INLAND ACROSS CENTRAL
CALIFORNIA SOMETIME MONDAY AFTERNOON OR EVENING. A PERIOD OF
MAINLY LIGHT PRECIPITATION WILL SPREAD ACROSS THE AREA WITH THIS
SYSTEM...THEN TAPER OFF BY MIDNIGHT...AND MOSTLY END BY DAYBREAK
TUESDAY.

TEMPERATURES WILL LOWER SOME 15 TO 20 DEGREES MONDAY AS CLOUDS
THICKEN AND AREAS OF PRECIPITATION DEVELOP. HOWEVER...THIS IS NOT
A COLD STORM...AND SNOW LEVELS IN THE SIERRA ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN
WELL ABOVE 8000 FEET...ONLY LOWERING TO 7000 TO 8000 FEET MONDAY
NIGHT AT THE LOWEST.

RAIN AMOUNTS SHOULD BE LIGHT...RANGING FROM A TENTH OF AN INCH OR
LESS IN THE VALLEY...UP TO A HALF INCH IN THE SOUTHERN SIERRA
FOOTHILLS...AND A TENTH OF AN INCH OR LESS IN THE TEHACHAPIS. THE
HIGH DESERTS OF KERN COUNTY ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN DRY.

SNOWFALL IN THE HIGH SIERRA SHOULD BE LESS THAN A HALF FOOT.
HOWEVER...IF YOU PLAN TO BE IN THE HIGH COUNTRY MONDAY YOU SHOULD
BE PREPARED FOR WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS...ESPECIALLY ABOVE 8000
FEET.

BECAUSE THIS SYSTEM WILL MOVE THROUGH QUICKLY...HEAVY RAIN IS NOT
ANTICIPATED IN THE SIERRA. THUS...NO SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN
SNOWMELT RUNOFF IS EXPECTED INTO MOUNTAIN RIVERS AND STREAMS.

hello everybodeee!

i am an englishman coming to Yosemite for like my 10th trip in 15 years at the very end of May 30th -04jun.... and over to Mammoth after....

with all this weather flying around it looks like the Tioga Road should be open hopefully by the 4th June still seeing as plowing is nearly over?


But the question I have for all of you veteran Sierra and Yosemite people is about the HALF DOME cable route - is it going to be open by JUNE?

I have a permit for 31MAY but I have a strange feeling that I will be there with my hiking buddies too early-even in JUNE!?....ive hiked it every time by the start of june....


any thoughts....how quickly once the majority of this year snow departs the subdome and cable route will they be able to open it up?... its been 20- 24degrees on the yosemite webcam for a fair few days....but looks colder again tomorrow albeit not too awfully....

ive hiked half dome 3 times but my buddies are basing the whole of their lives on getting up there with me the first time just around/ after memorial day weekend..

There's no way to tell until it's done. But I'd be surprised if the cables weren't up by June.

Thanks for this... last time i was in the park i got there a bit prematurely but it was the 12th may 2008 so we werent really expecting it to be open at all....fingers crossed that the storm tomorrow is just high level area snow ..im hoping that the rain will hope wash some of the white stuff away at lower levels ...yeah i can hope...!

this site is invaluable....

cant believe ive been visiting Mono County and Yosemite for 15 years and never stumbled across the site until now...

Bring on the heatwaves..;-) (and the wind blowing in the right direction in the UK so I can avoid the Icelandic volcano air traffic disruption get to the states in ten days time!)

cant wait to see Tioga in the spring...fingers crossed!

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HANFORD HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM
WATCH ABOVE 8000 FEET FOR SNOW...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 5 PM PDT
MONDAY UNTIL 5 AM PDT TUESDAY FOR THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA FROM
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK TO THE KERN COUNTY LINE.

AS THIS IS CONSIDERED A LATE SEASON STORM...SNOW AMOUNT CRITERIA
FOR WARNINGS AND ADVISORIES ARE LOWER THAN DURING THE NORMAL
WINTER SEASON. THE NEW CRITERIA FOR A WARNING IS 4 INCHES OR MORE.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: 4 TO 7 INCHES.

* ELEVATION: ABOVE 8000 FEET.

* LOCATIONS INCLUDE: TENAYA LAKE...SIERRA SUMMIT...TUOLUMNE
MEADOWS...PASCOES.

* WINDS: WESTERLY AT 15 TO 25 MPH ALONG THE SIERRA CREST.

* IMPACTS: WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS...POSSIBLE TRAVEL DELAYS.


PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS AND POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS.
PERSONS PLANNING TRAVEL INTO THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE SIERRA
SHOULD MONITOR NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR THEIR FAVORITE MEDIA SOURCE
