Are you sure that you really want to believe that sensor?

Here are the Snow Depth plots for the last 240 days from
Gin Flat:

Definitive data from Gin Flat:

http://cdec.water.ca.gov/jspplot/jspPlotServlet.jsp?sensor_no=2793&end=05%2F27%2F2010+11%3A36&geom=medium&interval=120&cookies=CDEC02

Still though with a 50% water content the snow depth would be nearly 4 feet. With a 25% water content the snow depth would be near 7 feet. Lots 'o snow.

It appears the snow depth sensor is stuck.

FYI, came across these references recently in case anyone wants to understand more about measuring/evaluating the data obtained by snow sensors at automated remote weather stations.

This M.S. thesis also contains some useful information on "traditional" measurements:
http://climate.colostate.edu/pdfs/Brazenec_Thesis_ALL.pdf

Subsequent peer-reviewed journal articles:
http://ccc.atmos.colostate.edu/pdfs/2008JAOT25_5_667-684~Ryan_etal-evaluating_snow_depth_sensors.pdf
http://ccc.atmos.colostate.edu/pdfs/RyanDoeskenFassnacht_HydrolProcess(2008).pdf

Poster's note: it appears that the Gin Flat site referenced in this thread may be unique in giving false high readings presumably due to having a chicken stuck in the sensor - a condition which might be best described as "Poultry Pollution."

The snow sensor at the Tuolumne Meadows weather station is seeing bare ground.

The sensors at White Wolf and Dana Meadows are still looking at snow depths of 35-40 inches, but they are starting to decrease at 2-3 inches/day
... and NOAA is predicting a 10°F temperature rise in the high country over the next week.

The White Wolf weather station snow sensor is reading near 0 inches.

The Dana Meadows sensor is showing <10 inches.

That must mean it's in a meadow. Snow cover under the trees at White Wolf is close to 100% (minus some circles around the trunks).

Not exactly. According to the GPS coordinates, it is located in a thinly wooded area about 200 ft. W of the road leading up to White Wolf (for those that may not know, that road was once part of the Old Tioga Road) at a point about 0.35 mi. from the intersection with the present-day Tioga Road. This is just past the point where the right-hand curve that sends the road almost due N is situated.

Yosemite Falls and Yosemite Point
Re: Lots of snow

I was in Yosemite 5-29 thru 6-5. did upper Yosemite falls and Yosemite point. Very litle snow on top. None to upper falls overlook. Drove Tioga pass on 6-5. Tenaya lake, Siesta lake still frozen over. Tuolumne Meadows frozen over also with lots of snow. Rivers in the valley were extremely high. Stayed in North Pines campground and the campsites on the north side of the campground were flooded. I'm heading for Tuolumne Meadows for ten days of hiking in late July, hope everything is clear by then.

jimbo,
Do you recall which site numbers in North Pines were flooded? I usually stay there, and would be interested in hearing which sites...
Re: Lots of snow
June 09, 2010 07:31AM
Sites 400,401,402,403,501,503. Also those sites on the back road by the trail to the backpackers camp that are lettered that you can't reserve, I think they are overflow or something, there always seems to be people in them. The day I left (6-5) The park service was coming in with sand bags and a backhoe. If you are staying in any of those sites you might want to check first.

Does this mean that the trail to backpackers camp is flooded?
Re: Lots of snow
June 09, 2010 11:08AM
Yes it was on June 4 & 5. The water was almost coming over the bridge that goes to the backpackers camp. The rangers were telling people to park at Curry Village or some other legal place and come in from the backside. Thats the old road that used to go to Indian Caves(for those of us that remember Indian caves)that is a bike path now. Long way to hike in for just one night. The backpakers camp is supposed to be for one night only, either coming off the trails or for the night before you hit the trails. There were some people coming in through North Pines Campground around 9:30 the night of June 4 and couldn't find the trail back there. They had a little girl about 9 yrs old. I showed them where it was and it was under water but they said they would wade through it anyway. They must have made it because I didn't see them again.

Also, FYI " those sites on the back road by the trail to the backpackers camp that are lettered that you can't reserve, I think they are overflow or something, there always seems to be people in them." - Those are sites reserved for various types of seasonal volunteers.

Thanks for the video. That helps answer the question as to general conditions along the road. Obviously there is still snow all over the place. Is it about the same for Tuolumne Meadows campground?

We were at Tuolumne Meadows last year on 6-20. The campground had just opened up for the year. We were able to get a site without reservations since the word hadn't gotten out yet. I am interested to see how much later it will open this year. My Glen Aulin hike starts 7-12. I hope conditions are reasonable by then.
