What gloves are typically used for half dome cable? Rubber/Latex grip or Leather/Work gloves.
Don't Judge me.

Hi Wookie,

Last Saturday I used $2.00/pair gloves from Home Depot:

Notice that the cables don't seem to be hooked up to any support as the cables are left against the side of Half Dome without being placed in the stanchions. This is legal, although most people wouldn't recommend it.

My personal favorite is the rubber-dipped palm versions from Atlas Glove:

These are available in different colors and materials (both the type of cloth and type of rubber). They provide a ridiculous amount of grip. I use one of these when shucking oysters; the rubber palm is enough to protect my hand if I slip since the knife isn't sharp. When I went up HD, I used a couple of mismatched knockoffs I found in the pile.

I believe that a cheaper version with just rubber dots provides enough fricton and is more breathable and comfortable.

Whatever works for you. Here's picture (not mine) of the pile next to the base of the cables. I used an image search, and I saw photos showing anywhere from just a few to even more than this photos.

You can see everything from standard leather gardening gloves, leather work gloves, full rubber, and rubber palmed cloth (my personal choice). I guess some even use cloth gloves just to protect against friction.

Quite a few people choose not to use gloves.

The cable is typically made of steel wire. No known sections are made of gloves.

P.S. We purposely waited until you got some serious replys to your question before posting this... but we couldn't resist adding some humor to the thread.

I never bothered with gloves nor felt any need of them.

I prefer to use the rubbery type on the way up for grip and leather for coming down. Leather will allow for sliding along the cable.

Forget the gloves, just look at how impeccably dressed Yury is, everything on him appears like it's brand new!
Very impressive! Looks like it's from the photo shoot for the next Ex Officio catalog! grinning smiley

Whatever you do, the park service prefers you DO NOT leave your gloves in the pile, in fact, they would like people to take a pair off the dome when leaving.
