Re: Peninsula Lake

A couple buddies of mine and da went boating and peak and lake bagging for 6 days.
Good times.

Here's one lake we visited. It's rarely visited as are the peaks around it.



For 6 days these are about the most clouds we ever saw.
Camped at Ruth, Otter, Peninsula, Bigelow, and above Kennedy.

Hit these peaks: Forsyth, Keyes, Schofield, and Bigelow

I recall seeing maybe 4 other people for 4 of the days. Not a soul off trail.

You can add Ruth and Helen as lakes they are removing the fish from.

If I have time I will put some more pictures together (took > 1500)

OK, I'll bite. Why are they removing the fish?

1500 photos? That's, like, one every two minutes of daylight. When did you get any time off?

They are removing fish to make room for native species of animal, like the yellow legged frog.

OK. I thought that the fungus had already killed all the high country frogs. Are there still some up there?

Not a lot, but yes.

There's lots of lakes with froggies.

Off the top of my noggin... really good places are Red Devil and Bear (between Penn. and Big Island).
Also good froggy habitat in ponds W of Roosevelt (Roose has fishies though).
There's others... but I just can't think of them at the moment...

I do think the Otters are gonna be feasting on frog legs though.
You would think places like Harriet would be great... but there are fish in that lake.

The lakes I've seen them removing fish from are: Ruth, Helen, Virginia, and Middle McCabe.

With no fish human impact will decrease significantly IMO. (seems everyone wants to fish)
Kinda interesting IMO since it seems a huge percentage of people are against
hunting... but fishing is OK. (I've given up fishing a number of years ago and am moving
more and more towards attempting to Leaving NO Trace)
(it irritates me that LNT has "minimize campfire impacts" )
(LNT should be "DO NO have a campfire in the wilderness, period" )

Back in the sixties I used to hike in the Utah canyon country. We always built our campfires in a dry streambed. There was never any trace of them after the next downpour.

Billie, we have some picts of the otters at Peninsula too don't we? The sun did not cooperate but I will check mine for a decent pict....
