Snow Creek Cabin, open or not?
December 15, 2010 10:25PM
According to the original poster of this page, http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=32264 he stayed there and anyone can. But a commenter says it is locked and the NPS uses it for a cache. Which story is true?

Hotroddy,
Dunno what the heck the 2nd guy is talking about. They unlock the hut around Dec. 20th.
If you really wanna go up there... just make sure they unlocked it... call a ranger or go to the
Visitor Center and make sure if not Jan. yet. We had a very long discussion with
a ranger on the 20th last year when he was going up the switchbacks to go unlock it.
(thus I know for certain that they unlock it) He was saying to cache food and whatnot...
so you didn't have to carry as much gunk in. Thought that was interesting ...
note that the hut can fill up so like the TM accoms... you are not guaranteed a spot...
although Snow Creek is probably not gonna fill up.

Here's a post from last year.. thought I mentioned the hut... but I guess I didn't. maybe
did in another post... but don't mind posting again.

I'd post a picture of the hut... but it's not right on the trail... so never visited it... and
failed miserably trying to find it once...

Have fun

Is Snow Creek Cabin the same as the old Snow Creek Lodge?

Frank,
It's the same building. I wanna check it out this winter sometime... so if that happens I'll post some more picts.
One thing that is mentioned is that nothing is required.... that is wrong, you ALWAYS need a wilderness
permit to stay overnight in the wilderness, year round. It's just that it is self registration and even if you do run into
a ranger they may not even bother asking for the permit though.

It's about 7 miles and about a 3700 ft. climb to the cabin.

There are other snow survey cabins around... afaik those cabins are locked year round
and you need a key to get in. Since the Snow Creek one was refurb in 2006 I probably
wouldn't have an issue staying in that one... the others.. I dunno.
The ones I can think of are at:
Upper Kibbie Ridge (Sachse Cabin),
Between Tioga and May Lake
Lake Vernon
EF Cherry Creek (near Huckleberry)
and, open for business... Ostrander Ski Hut

Others?

I've been by the Sachse and Lake Vernon snow cabins, but I haven't seen the other ones. Although I guess it isn't technically a snow cabin and not in Yosemite, there's still a quite nice ranch house at Yellowhammer Lake in the Emigrant. I hear the Forest Service bigwigs get the keys during the summer when they want a nice getaway.

Hi,
I stayed at snow creek cabin last year and I'm looking for similar cabins in the Sierras. Do you know if the cabins at Sachse, Lake Vernon, or Yellow Hammer (emigrant) are unlocked in the winter and free of reservation requirements and fees?
Thanks,
Tommy

Those cabins are emergency shelters for the snow survey crews and are not open to the public.

One rarely comes across any of those old posters of Black Bart's comical sidekick, Crimson Chick-on.

We have one of the current Chick-on hanging in our burrow. The nice lady at the Tuolumne Meadows Post Office had some extras so she kindly gave one to us.
