Tioga and Glacier Point Roads Opening & Closing Dates
Clearing of the Tioga Road begins on or about April 15 each year and usually takes between one and two months. Predicting when these roads will open is not possible, even in late spring, because weather in April and May can affect plowing progress significantly.

Tioga and Glacier Point Roads Plowing Update
This page will be updated in late April 2011, when spring opening operations begin.

Once plowing of the Tioga Road is completed, additional work must be completed before the road can safely be opened.

Factors affecting plowing operations:
Avalanche zones (26 potential areas). The Olmsted Point avalanche zone requires a lot of work, including application of charcoal over the snow to help with melting and blasting the snow slab to make it safer for personnel.
Heavy snow pack slows the whole operation.
Trees that have fallen across the road and been buried in the snow. These can cause substantial damage to the equipment and result in a stop to all operations until they're cleared.
Rock slides buried by the snow. These can cause substantial damage to the equipment and result in a stop to all operations.
Snow storms during the opening require a stop to Tioga Road operations and in order to plow and sand the park roads.
Road repairs and ditching and brushing operations once snow has melted back enough.

Yep, fell for it hook line and sinker. Probably would have even had it been on the 1st!

So many people have been asking questions lately and starting to make plans for the summer activities and asking questions for which there is NO answer yet I just jumped into answer/explanation mode.

Yes, it's plowed. But the dirty portion gets quite muddy.

Me too. Probably a lot of delays this year. I guess that is where you were this weekend.

Done that when the lodge was operating but now there is no relief at the top unless you go all the way to Tuolumne Meadows where you might get a warm greeting from the resident ranger.

Thanks for the laugh....If they get it open by Memorial Day weekend it'll be quite a feat! I'm thinking first weekend in June, which also would be quite a feat.

Last year (which, although had a pretty wet winter/spring) I got in there right at end of June when they opened; ... still plenty of snow patches in TM campground. and the stream crossings (Return; Matterhorn; Spiller; etc.) were pretty darn tough to manage.

This year's had a bunch more precip' ... July, is my hunch ...
