RID SCALPERS - POST craigslist ads for flagging - *KEEP IT UP GUYS!*

Craigslist removes ads when they are flagged from multiple IP's.

Post the craigslist ad where it is obvious that a scalper is selling PERMITS AND CAMPSITES and whoever open this thread, please go out and flag them.

Check by searching for "half dome" and "yosemite" and flag by clicking the "prohibited" tab

I think this is the most we can do while Yosemite tries to figure out a new system.

It seems like it's the same guy re-posting those ads. I think he either get email alerts, or has some automated program that re-posts automatically because the moment it was removed, he posted another one.

Yes, when your post is removed, you get an email alert.

I just go to CL for my area and do a search for "Yosemite" and another for "Half Dome" and flag all the posts I see that are sellers.

I'll start going to Orange County, Los Angeles, and San Diego too.

The easiest way to find all of them at one time (all craigslist websites) is using Google's advanced search. Go to Google.com. Click on Advanced search. Put Yosemite or Half Dome in the search bar. Under Search within a site or domain put in craigslist.org

Use www.searchtempest.com . Awesome tool to search multiple (or even every) CL site at one time. I search for "Yosemite" in all for sale and flagged about a dozen.

All reservations should be non-transferable (no trading, nothing) - Why can't the Park Service just implement this - It would wipe out the problem

I don't know if I like that. I mean, sure it would fix the problem. But what it would also hurt the regular people too.

When we make our reservations, we let our close friends know they can join us (in their own tent, TYVM) for whatever dates work for them. They then start making plans to join us and then some BS happens to us (like what happened to make us cancel our trip this week, boo). Since the friends weren't originally only the reservation because they weren't sure they could make it, etc., they would lose out on their plans because of us not being able to transfer the campsite to them.

Basically, it would create another level of complexity that would stop the scalping, but it might be going too far and start hurting people who are otherwise following the rules.

I understand but wouldn't the situation you describe be the exception more than the rule - Demand is too high and it seems to make sense that controls be put in place that we would need to live by - The majority would not be affected

I like this idea as I am in the same boat as Itchbay. If we are lucky enough to get a site (or two) we share with family and friends. If we had to cancel (an emergency I would imagine), I would feel horrible if we ruined the vacation of those we invited. I like the alternate name suggestion because if we can't make it, there is an official record of another person on the actual reservation so there would be no worries.

This whole reselling issue makes me sick too! I tried for the June 15 reservation period and couldn't get anything in the valley. I tried again for July 15 and was successful and got the exact sites I wanted, but I feel this was because my husband and I had access to multiple high speed computers (we used for both campground reservations and Half Dome permits). I think it stinks that we had to resort to this and am saddened for people who want to camp in Yosemite and don't have access to that type of technology.

Also, you should have a valid driver license ID#, so if they institute a policy of 2 or 4 max per person, you would not be able to get more permits since you need the credit card to match the driver license name

It might be difficult to do that. Most IDs aren't checked and not everyone has a driver license. In addition, Recreation.gov allows for international bookings. It might be difficult to check assorted international DLs.

it looks like we have been putting a dent into the scalpers as I haven't seen any new postings on craigslist in a couple of hours already. Usually they repost them within minutes.

Either way, the flagging from my phone and computer takes me less than a couple of minutes. I don't mind one bit if I do this everyday....as long as the scalpers get screwed over.

$90 a night? Wow. What a moron. They only cost $20 a night through the official website. Too bad he also doesn't know it's illegal to sell campsites. I passed this one along to the CSR at recreation.gov.

I just flagged a whole bunch. There are too many. They just keep coming. This whole thing is disgusting. I wish craigslist would put a filter up so they don't even make it online. Also, has anyone looked at ebay lately?

they've dwindled down tremendously since people started contributing to this thread

I haven't found any in a day already.

I still check them everyday on searchtempest which searches all craigslist sites, so if they are hoping we forget about them, they're gravely mistaken.

Craiglist has the following advice: http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/abuse

If your personal information has been posted in a craigslist ad:

use our online form to report the issue
choose "harassment" from the drop-down menu.
put 911 in the subject field.
provide as much information as possible, including the posting ID number, keywords that might appear in the ad, and the specific craigslist city and category in which the post appears.


Additionally, since posts containing personal information violate craigslist's terms of use, you can flag these postings as prohibited, just as you can flag Half Dome/camping reservations as prohibited. (Craiglist has agreed that posting Half Dome and camping reservations is a prohibited use of its service. This guy's beef is with craigslist, not you.)

Might be time for the moderator to contact the F.B.I. internet division with whatever IP info he has on this guy. My guess is he is into a lot of illegal stuff besides the Yosemite stuff and putting out someone's personal info shows he is a little demented. He also is not careful and he can easily be located by the F.B.I. They'll search warrant Craigslist and I.D. him quickly.

Thanks EEEK for that website. If you notice this ARCKHIPOVA guy is online with us a lot so he's reading this. Hopefully Sactown will follow through with that website and anyone else who feels their privacy has been compromised and has received any other veiled threats from this person (Suspicious phone calls, etc.). Once they look into this guy other stuff might surface. Kind of like when the police pull over someone with expired license tags. They run the driver's license of the driver and come up with all kinds of bad stuff. Keep up the good fight!

I have had luck with getting the reservations refunded if the person is specific, IE Campsite 28 for august 22-29 in lower pines. The email that I have been using to get the info to the is YOSE_Web_Manager@nps.gov and it gets forwarded from there.

I have had quite a few of the scalpers do a bunch of stuff towards me. Lot's of gay porn... Luckily a lot of the sites recorded the perpetrators IP address and when I contacted the ISP and told them I was threatening legal action everything magically stopped. I hope the person got their internet cancelled!

I have also been emailing craigslist and informing them that they are allowing scalpers every morning. If we all do this maybe craigslist will finally do something about it, Ebay did!

Sorry guys that I was out.

I was actually camping in yosemite this weekend and come back to this drama.


I can care less about this hacker. If someone has enough time on their hands, they can do the same thing. Look up someone's IP, input their name into a people finder and get some basic info.

But, I will have A LOT of fun reporting his info to various law enforcement agencies!

I'm wondering if people are not flagging those ads looking to buy, because they're not really getting removed. I certainly think those trying to buy online are guilty of the problem also, and I'd like to encourage everyone to report all buyers. If buyers can't be eliminated, then flagging sellers is just a huge waste of time. The fact that you have tons of buyers requesting specific dates should make it clear that eliminating only 1/2 of this issue isn't going to do much to protect tourists from these douchebag scalpers. Or perhaps craigslist won't remove posts from illegal buyers, in which case the best defense would be probably be to spam craigslist with a million fake buy requests. Thoughts? Am I wrong to report prospective buyers?

Yeah, I was helping out with a couple here and there and then saw the PM I received. The warning post a few days ago had me weary as well, but I have been making a point to check in more often and help flag more frequently now.

Out of curiosity, I noticed some of the craigslist ads mention swaps for campsites and/or half dome permits and are not necessarily for sales. Some have been posted, but are we flagging all of those as well? I have seen a message board set up for the explicit purpose of swapping or begging for permits and it's frustrating. People can't get the date they want, so they grab as many other dates as they can in hopes of a swap (can't get a Sat/Sun so grab many weekday permits instead in hopes of making a trade). Other sites have had their Half Dome hiking sections taken over for permit requests and/or swaps.

I just want to make sure we are hurting those trying to make a profit (or ruining the intent of the permit system) and not those who truly had a change of plans or made an honest mistake. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, I cannot guess intent from someone's story they type into the ad. Having to flag things is a lousy solution, but the park isn't doing anything (at least this year) to ensure reservations are kept away from the scalpers. Even if the person requesting isn't just trying to game the system, it doesn't matter much in the big picture. Unpreprared tourists are the lifeblood of the scalpers, and there's no way the scalpers will stop if people can keep requesting permits on craigslist.

Some have been posted, but are we flagging all of those as well? I have seen a message board set up for the explicit purpose of swapping or begging for permits and it's frustrating. People can't get the date they want, so they grab as many other dates as they can in hopes of a swap (can't get a Sat/Sun so grab many weekday permits instead in hopes of making a trade). Other sites have had their Half Dome hiking sections taken over for permit requests and/or swaps.

I just want to make sure we are hurting those trying to make a profit (or ruining the intent of the permit system) and not those who truly had a change of plans or made an honest mistake. Thoughts?

I've had communications with many scalpers in the past couple of weeks and have been forwarding all of those chain of emails to YNP and they in turn are forwarding them to law enforcement agencies who at the time are figuring out a way how to prosecute these individuals.

I just made a mistake in using my personal email when communicating with them, so they basically put my name into a people finder website, which is open to the public and looked up my info.


He/she attempted to scare the board, so in turn posted the only person's information they knew about....my info.
But, in reality they are scum who are looking foolish trying to threaten an entire board.

I flag all of them - buyers, sellers, and swappers. On Mt. Whitney, I don't think swappers are allowed. Somebody tried to swap Mt. Whitney permits on the Whitney Portal Store Board and was promptly chastized by the moderator. I think this whole Half Dome permit debacle and campsite mess is the result of poor judgement by the NPS. I also think Craigslist needs to get on board and start filtering these ads out.

Craiglists is the same outfit that allowed (or still does) rampant prostitution. Half Dome Permits and Camp Site reservations are the least of their illegal items sold.

I'm wary of treating buyers the same way as the illegal sellers. I understand the practicality of it but I don't believe it is illegal to buy a permit. But I also saw one post flagged that was offering to share their campsite in return for sharing of a half dome permit. That seems completely legit to me.

I flag the folks offering to buy. I leave the trade posts up, although technically they're illegal too. We're not going to stop all illegal behavior, but I want to make it as difficult as possible on the professional scalpers -- the folks with 10+ campsites throughout the summer. If they can't post their sites, they can still respond to these folks posting to buy.

Agree. Plus there is so much to more to do at Yosemite than climb Half Dome. There are plenty of other peaks to summit, if people would like a view from the top. Doesn't really make sense, except that a lot of people do seem to have a one track mind.

Honestly, if someone wants to hike up from the Valley floor to a place that has a great view of the Valley, there is no better trail than the 4-Mile Trail to Glacier Point, and then for a spectacular 360-degree panaroma view continue on the Pohono Trail to Sentinel Dome.

While I can understand some of the popularity of hiking up Half Dome, I really don't see why so many people are fixated on it. I guess it just must be on many people's bucket list.

But it just doesn't seem practical to bring a dog - They aren't allowed on trails and are limited to where they can be - Can't be left alone at a campsite - There are kennels but why put the dog there when you can probably do it cheaper at home.

I know this is tedious to flag all these, but we seem to be losing steam. Flagging for a couple of days isn't going to do much. This is going to have to be done for a while to ensure these pricks have to eat a lot of their reservations. Thanks to all contributing to the effort.
