The Inyo National Forest, Mono Lake Ranger District has prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the June Loop Hazardous Fuels Reduction Project. The project proposes to conduct fuels reduction treatments on approximately 4,578 acres managed by the Inyo National Forest. Fuels reduction work would occur in close proximity to communities in the June Lake Loop area. These communities include June Lake, Clark Tract, Silver Lake , Dream Mountain, and others. Proposed fuels reduction activities include tree thinning, tree pruning, shrub cutting or mowing, slash piling and burning, and prescribed burning. The purpose of this project is to manage vegetation so the potential for a high severity wildfire is reduced and wildfire defensible space is created around recreation developments and communities. The project was planned under the authorities outlined in the Healthy Forest Restoration Act of 2003.

This news release is to inform the public of the 30-day objection period for this project. The publication date of the Legal Notice in the Inyo Register is expected on Thursday, July 7, 2011. This Legal Notice is the exclusive means for calculating the specific beginning and ending dates of the objection period for this proposal. Only those individuals or organizations who submitted specific written comments during public scoping will have standing to file an objection as part of the predecisional review process under 36 CFR 218.

Once the objection period ends, the Forest Service will issue a decision based on this EA consistent with the applicable authority and the laws, regulations, and policies specific to the agency and unit. The Responsible Official who will issue a decision on the project is District Ranger, Jon Regelbrugge.

A copy of the EA is available at this internet site: http://www.fs.fed.us/nepa/project_content.php?project=34649.
