Bear vs Bike & Chipmunks vs Boots
July 14, 2011 09:04AM
A cyclist creamed a 300lb. bear (or was it the other way around?), and a backpacker left his boots outside the tent.
And a lost camera, too.

Details here from the Fresno Bee.

How does anyone know the weight of the bear?

I'm pretty certain that both the bear and the chipmunkMarmut that
decided to eat Sean's shoes weighed about the same.

You can check it out at
SaveSaunsShoes.com - it's now part of our heritage

(kudos to who posted about savehalfdome.org btw)

I think I will now add to everything I feel entitled to getting, whether I really am or not, "it's part of our heritage." Who knows, maybe people will sign a petition to get my car loan paid off or something.

Figures Sean is from Fresno - crazy people live here. Lots of them don't wear shoes and blame chipmunks.

Calculated from weight of rider+bicycle, flight distance of rider, material properties of bicycle frame, velocity vectors of both parties, and assumed interaction impulse. [Answer provided by Newton Marmot]

Sean obviously doesn't know the difference between a chipmunk and a chikin.

Hmmm, maybe Sean didn't know the difference between marmots and chipmunks!

there was a chick at Ostrander who bounced up to me and yelled, "did you see all the beavers?" and pointed at all the marmots sitting there staring at us...

Rock beavers. Sure.

Absolutely. When frightened they squeal, slap their tails on the ground, dive under the nearest rock and resurface hundreds of feet away (behind you).

You marmots don't seem to be too happy with the reduced number of visitors to the top of Half Dome.

Here's a photo of your cousin Frank complaining about the lack of Cheetos on top of Half Dome this year:

Ouch. I've heart tales of kamikazi squirrels mixing it up with mountain bikers (and getting caught in the gears). But this beats that by about a million.
