I came across this story while surfing for info on bear spray in Yosemite:

http://www.backpacking.net/featured1.html
I was attacked by a black bear (trash bear) last summer in Yosemite....

(unattributed, undated, and potentially fabricated story)

Bear spray is still considered a weapon, and would still be illegal. As a firearm, a shotgun (even loaded) would be legal - ironically enough.

Seriously though - if a bear had attacked someone in a tent, there would have been some news stories about it.

And what the heck is Mt. Whitney National Park?

Yeah, this set my bullshit detector off as well. Why would one even use the phrase "a few miles from Little Yosemite Valley" to describe a camping location? If I were _in_ LYV I'd say so, otherwise I'd say something else. LYV is not an iconic _backpacking_ destination, its simply a frequently used one.

I would have been more specific.

It's still ironic that the public isn't allowed to bring weapons which may include paintball guns (which are used by NPS for bear hazing), slingshots, bear spray, personal-defense pepper spray, or other items that might be used against a bear. However - because some member of Congress slipped language into a credit card reform bill, firearms are now legal in areas under NPS jurisdiction.

This goes right along with:

"I nearly stepped on a rattlesnake so now I carry a venom extraction kit."

Scott is a dumbass. Period.

When entering Yosemite backcountry:
Deposit the stupid bear bells and pepper spray in the garbage cans at the trailhead.

I guess my wife got attacked by a bear too in Glen Aulin when we had our food
in our tent with us. (she got nudged awake) (and we never lost any food)

Did the bear say anything like, "Hey buddy, can you spare a Twinkie?" wink

That was over ten years ago and bear cans were totally an option. There were no trees around at that spot for hanging food either. The bear did get about five pounds of prunes from Andy. Went through the bear like a marble through a pipe.
