Had fun over the last weekend plus hiking with The Old Dude and
boatin a few lakes and exploring Kendrick Canyon and visiting my
favorite lake in the park.

Nice trip. I noticed Chick-On doesn't turn his back on the photographer. Trust issues?

Nice tail feathers and all but Chick-On has got to be admiring the view, not the photographer. Trust me on that issue.

Looks like the Chick-on is suffering from a wee bit of seasickness in this video. I hope he didn't upchuck too much. wink

Nice pics, thanks. I'll have to add the Kendrick Lakes to my lengthening list of trips to consider.

Are you trying to confuse me?

Probably should have just titled it "Kendrick Canyon Trip".
But since the ranger giving us the permit strip searched us
after I told her that her "allowed canister" sign was outdated
and flat out wrong... and then thought we were going
to spend night one in "Kerrick Canyon"... it prob. wouldn't matter.

Even the Marmuts are quiet. What is going on?

O well. Here's Old Dude Sighting:

Have a nice day

Just curious, what was outdated about her "allowed canister" sign?

And what was she exactly searching for?

Oh, and have you ever dealt with her before?

Just wondering...

I'd guess that it was a search for a "proper" bear canister and to make sure all his food was actually in the bear canister. EDIT, although given some of the posts Chick-on has made, I wouldn't be surprised if the ranger was looking for a little "medicine" in his pack that the federal government doesn't recognize as legal.

One the ranger note, as a rule of thumb in my experience, most backcountry rangers have been very cool and mostly good people. If there's a ranger that I'm going to have an issue with (or vice versa), its probably going to be the frontcountry ranger giving me the permit.

She was searching for a can that matched on on her picture chart. Make and model.
She had a picture poster of the "allowable" bear cans but it was made prior to the Bear Boxer coming on the market. If you look at the NPS Yosemite site you will find a list of OK cans. The Bear Boxer Contender (101) and the Champ (202) are on it. The Bear Boxer looks just like the Garcia except it has a different lid locking mechanism.

Entering at HH this spring is the only time where I've been asked to show my bear canister (entering at HH in November 2010 I was just asked what canister I had). I just opened the back of my Subie, there was a black canister-thingie, and we were done. No chart or anything. Has the HH inspection gotten more detailed since then?

I suspect a new hire being a stickler. I also think that when she looked up Bill-e-g's data she saw that he had many trips under his belt and and backed off. We had to remove the cans from the pack and hold it in our hands for inspection. This did not make the goat happy as his pack only has access from the top. In the past if we just knocked on the pack and it made the proper noise we were good to go.

Main complaint was already knocked it from the outside.
Obvious it was a bear can. The ranger lady was a newbie.
Quite the contrast from last time in May getting permit
and getting "waved" thru.
It's the second time a ranger never heard of Bare Boxer.

chick-on,

Do you mean that The Old Dude has carried this inflatable boat in a backpack?
How heavy is it?

No. Hiked with Old Dude. Boated with Billy.
Old Dude lounged when "we" went to the lakes and hiked to Edith.

The boat is really very light. It's the Flyweight Designs FlytePakcer Packraft.
More stuff on boats here:

Looking at FWD website they have a couple of new boats you can buy.

The blue one imo is the best option. Pretty darn happy with it.
It has only one chamber ... so if the water is really cold... you may end up
with a booty that gets cold too..
It doesn't come with paddles ... so I just used my old Sevylor Paddles.
O... and it's ridonkulously expensive.
