October Hikes in Yosemite
October 07, 2011 07:35AM
I'm going to Yosemite next week (week of Oct 16). Had two big hikes planned (Pohono Trail, Cloud's Rest) but am worried recent snowfall will prevent us from doing the hikes. Anyone have ideas for other snow hikes? We have snowshoes. Thanks,

As has been posted here in response to other questions on the same topic, you probably won't need snowshoes for a foot of fresh snow. You may need help following the trail, but a foot of fresh snow is pretty easy to manage in regular boots.

But you will need to account for temperature and altitude. Pohono might still be a good choice. And you can only wait to see what the weather brings over the next few days before you can decide about Cloud's Rest.

But there a TONs of great hikes in Yosemite for all times of year. We have a bunch on our website in the destinations section, and there are many more listed on threads on these very boards.

Or just read a good mystery novel set in the Sierra; https://www.amazon.com/Danger-Falling-Rocks-Paul-Wagner/dp/0984884963

Too bad that Clouds Rest is probably not possible for this weekend. Hopefully the weather the way it is today, the snow melts, and it becomes good enough for next week.

You can try Ten Lakes or Youngs Lake in the high country. The weather this weekend will be in the 60's with no additional snow forecast. So the melt-off should be significant. You can also do a great hike on the Valley Floor, the Four Mile Trail to Sentinel Dome. There would be minimal to no snow on that trail except above Glacier Point.
