avatar Turtleback Dome Webcam: Why the extreme closeup of El Cap?
October 07, 2011 09:13AM
Does anyone know why someone changed the view of the Turtleback Dome webcam? Right now it is zoomed in for an extreme close-up of El Capitan and nothing else.

Can the webcam's zoom be controlled remotely, or did someone go up to the webcam and manually changed the position and the the focal length of the webcam's lens?

[Woo Hoo! Someone finally fixed the webcam and it is now properly positioned. -PL (10-11-11)]

Perhaps a happy accident caused by a chikin roosting on the lens.

wind storm + loose mounting brackets = camera that changes view

I don't think the zoom of the lens has changed, I think it's just been blown a bit to the left.

We're sticking with the 'chikin thesis' as the simplest explanation.

Watch the archived webcam views on October 5th. Just before 8 am there is some strong wind & disturbance from the storm, and by 8:05 the camera has the new view. http://archives.halfdome.net/archive/search

It's pretty cool to watch the storm move through.

Please note that 8 AM is precisely the time that the chikin leaves the roost to start work.

Must be the chikin. When I looked at the Sentinel Dome netcam this morning, the chikin was right in front of the lens, blocking the view of Half Dome.

Explain how you capture the image when you are up there? Smart phone? Someone back home?

Waits until he gets home and looks for the image in the cam's history I suspect.

Sorry about the nautical closeup der. I blame THE Old Dude. I actually called him from
up there and he said I wuz too low at an earlier time. Argh!

On a related note. Dang I hate cell phones. Standing RIGHT BELOW THE TOWER
and it has trouble finding a tupid signal! Argh!

W/R to the view of the camera:
a) Damn I'm Smooth
b) You cannot see Yose Falls from this area... too many trees, etc.
c) You cannot see Nevada or Vernal from this area... same as b)
d) Even further up toward top of Sentinel Dome Nevada Falls is not visible.
So... we have to be happy there is a camera up there at all

No. See the look on the face of the bird? It's a painfully placed hiking stick being used to hold the bird up.no, stop, enough!

Wonder if they have the book:
"Braising Marmuts for Brilliant Birds" ?

I do see they have:
"Raising Goats .. "
but even the kids can be pretty darn ornery

Have a nice day turkeys!

When I was on TOP of Sentinal Dome, I got a worse signal then when I was about 25 feet downslope toward the north. Where exactly is the web cam and tower?

I got some bozo below saying "just stay still for 5 minutes!"..
I flipped him the bird and said... put me on a stick if you want that!

It should work well for Pseudogallus roseus, but so would a staple gun :-)
