The Inyo National Forest is preparing to implement the pile burning phase of the Whitney Portal Project. The pile burning is being conducted to reduce hazardous fuels that have accumulated in the Whitney Portal area over the past 50 years or more. The piles of forest fuels will be burned while surrounded by snow during the months of November through March. When piles are being burned, smoke may be visible from Manzanar to approximately 5 miles south of Lone Pine, California.
Prescribed burn operations will be conducted when weather and fuel conditions are within prescription to safely accomplish the project objectives. For more information, contact Rick Napoles at 760-937-6205.
