Tioga Road in the high country of Yosemite National Park has no snow and is open to cars. This is the latest in winter that 9,943-foot Tioga Pass has been open since park officials started keeping records in 1933.

Access is virtually unprecedented this week to Tioga Road (Highway 120), Tuolumne Meadows and the trailhead and hike to 13,053-foot Mount Dana.

Kelly Clark provided me with this photo diary of his climb with Doug Tomlinson to the summit of Mount Dana, with spectacular shots that include looking down at Saddlebag Lake, at 10,087 feet, the highest drive-to lake in California, as well as across to 13,120-foot Mount Lyell above Donohue Pass. The hike started at 11:30 a.m. in clear, calm weather and took only two hours to summit.

There was so little snow you could wear running shoes to the top.
