Two rockfalls occurred near the Church Bowl picnic area on April 3 and 4. Both rockfalls happened at night, the first at 11:15 pm on April 3 and the second at 10:35 pm on April 4. The rockfalls originated from a point about 600 feet above the valley floor and fell onto the talus slope east of the Church Bowl area, destroying dozens of trees and depositing hundreds of tons of fresh rock debris. Because the rockfalls happened at night, there were no injuries associated with the events.
Due to the popularity of climbing routes in the Church Bowl area, and the potential for additional rock falls in the near future, a hard closure has been established for the eastern portion of the Church Bowl area, including the climbing route "Bishop's Terrace". The cliff will be monitored for additional rockfall activity.
