Ten Lakes down to Tuolumne

Has anyone down this trip? I know there is no official trail, but heard this was possible. If you've done it and have any tips, please let me know. Thanks.

BTW, I've done GCT several times, want to find a different way down rather than White Wolf.

I haven't done this trip, but I would certainly look at photos others (read: pink chickens...) have posted of the Ten Lakes outlet creek from below--I remember at it and thinking there were places where one could get hung up if the correct side or route weren't chosen.

I haven't either. I answered this question.. wow... in 2009...
http://www.yosemite.ca.us/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=932#p3082
And still haven't done it yet... what is wrong with me?

I do know more now than then... Well... since we were down in the GCT in 2010
and I took a good look at this... and took a bunch of pictures... last year...
weather didn't cooperation in the Muir Gorge traverse... so I'm hoping
this year. I MAY do the traverse and then hike up this way.

Anyway, I concluded was Basil said... it looks like it is do-able.. but there is one
section that is iffy. I'd give it a go up.

When I'm back next beginning of next week I'll look thru my pix and post
a few from 2010 when I was spying it.

btw I'm pretty certain Mr. Peabody didn't even make an attempt...
Have fun,

Thanks for the responses. I'm going up Wednesday, and I think I'm going to give it a try. Getting a crazy detailed elevation map to help pick the sanest route. If we live, I'll post some info on the route we took :-)

Hmm... so you are going down now? Not worried about crossing the River now?

If you have seen no photos at all... this is what it looks like:

Big Picture:

The route I'd say is the least painful:

It should be obvious what the crux location is... as long as the outlet isn't outta control... I feel it is do-able.
I took a zoom of it:

When you get back post what you do. (even if you just go to Ten Lakes and say sca-rew it)

Have fun

Awesome! This looks like a killer trip. No risk, no reward. Look forward to the report.

Haha, I didn't even think of that. Well, too late to edit it -- I should have said, epic. Looks like an epic trip!

Chick-On

Thanks for the detailed pics. I took some myself this weekend. After some last minute research (and which follows your question), I couldn't figure out how to cross the river without going all the way to Pate Valley, which defeats the purpose of a short cut. So we did the GCT as normal and took similar photos that you posted. Looks challenging for a "backpacking-non-technical-climber", but I still might try it someday. But like you said, need to wait for the river to be waaay down in order to safely cross. Thanks again for the response - it's hard to get comments like this anywhere else that I know.

Well... that's me... "backer-non-techincal-climber". Beauty of it is...
with a pair a hiking sticks and non-traditional-backer-weight pack (easy to do nowadays).
you can go just about anywhere...
Thanks for coming back and saying something. Too many don't.
You have to be able to cross the river. Period. There may be logs further upstream
(I seem to recall some)... but... that stuff moves... and to HAVE to ... is.. well..
a big question mark... no way you stay out of the river and get to Pate...
The Muir Gorge is in your way.
Anyway, I really think this is definitely do-able. If you look at something like
Tree Chute in the Valley... that is steeper than this.. and about the same elevation.
I'll let you know if I do it. Muir Gorge is very high prob. for me this yr.

Have fun
