Re: Snow Camping Pics

I'm recovering from shingles, and last weekend's Sierra night temperatures were much better than the previous weekend...so I wanted to camp on Devils Dance Floor. Along the way the rashes (which were on my left shoulder) started protesting the pack strap rubbing against them...so I camped on top of hill 7069 along the Tamarack Flat Road. Quite nice, but I must return and camp on the Dance Floor.

How many people does that tent hold?

Officially 3, which means its really 2, but I was there solo. Its my 4 season tent, pretty bomb-proof, didn't need that this weekend but I don't camp in winter with my 3 season tent.

Just occurred to me...were you asking about the size of the tent, or the obvious trail to the tent? I pack down a path around the tent for a kitchen area and in case I have to pee in the middle of the night and don't want to put on showshoes. I also packed a path because there were interesting views at different points around the hill and I wanted to see them as the sun moved without putting on snowshoes. Which was pretty nice Saturday, because the night wasn't very cold at first and the moon was quite bright on that hill, so I could just wander around.

I use a pee bottle. No need to get up.

It's good info for people who aren't used to snow camping. I have a four season
solo. .. well... even a 4 season 3 person (convertible they call it)... and I've used
those a few times in winter... just because I have the darn things. 3 season or
bivy or tarp or dig hole works a treat. (been snowed on many a times)
Anyway, I was slightly amused at the trip reports and bomber tent pix.

I had to search the forum to see what this was about (2009...before I joined).

I think I'll stick with packing down a snow trail to a nearby tree.

I'm starting to "degoogle" my life. I'm becoming very annoyed by how intrusive Google wants to be.

I've already swapped out my Android smartphone with a Windows 8 phone after I kept running into low in internal memory because Google insisted on installing more bloatware onto my Droid phone even though my smartphone running Android 2.2.3 couldn't even take advantage of the most of bloatware (i.e. Google PlayStore services).

Glad I made the switch. The Windows Phone 8 OS is superior, IMHO, to Google's Android OS as are many of the apps, especially those produced by Nokia.

Anyway, end of my Google rant.

The Tioga Road is open to the parking lot for the Tuolumne Grove (and plowed 1/4 mile beyond), I parked there and snowshoed.

If you consult the map you will find I was just trying to save you some distance.

Yes, but Einstein told me it's a geodesic and that's not aways a straight line.

I would dearly have loved to quote that Wikipedia definition on my first day of high school geometry class when the teacher drew a straight line on the blackboard, defining it as the shortest distance between two points. We all thought is was hilarious and that it was going to be any easy class!

Valley floor straight up to El Cap Dome; 3500'. Hiking up from Yosemite Falls trail about 7+ miles. Distance saved; about 7 miles. Obviously straight up is better as it is shorter.
