Widow's Tears Rare Repeat
18-Jan-2013
By
Duane Raleigh

Widow’s Tears, America’s longest continuous ice climb and also one of its most elusive, has had a rare ascent, by Kevin Daniels, Kurt Wedberg and Trevor Anthes, on January 15.

Nearly 1,000 feet high, Widow’s Tears was first climbed by Kevin Worrall and Mark Chapman in the 1970s, and is one of Yosemite’s first waterfalls to dry up, and requires a rare combination of leakage and a cold snap to form...

Kewl

How quickly we forget.

I drew this and posted it before:

The truth of the matter is simply that the name has been re-used.
(much like O My!) ... That now Widow's and Silver Strand are 2 different falls.

Up to at least 1922 Silver Strand was called Widows Tears:

by 1938 it's name was changed:

The cold snap that flew through a couple of weekends ago made for some spectacular
falls (and obviously ice climbing). Sorry didn't spot current day Widow's Tears...
but here it is in it's former glory (Silver Strand). Was going to post it here:

But didn't b/c it wasn't nice clear ice... (and if I showed one of everything)

My first thought when saw the question was... they climbed that?

btw... iirc Ribbon used to be called Virgin's Tears. So I guess by the time you went from the north rim to the
south rim... you went from a virgin to a widow. Guess a name change is good.

Have fun

Tanks fur (feathers in this case!) the peek-chure. Yup, I failed Yosemite Waterfalls 1A again! (actually, the pic that I saw was very small and only showed the upper area....) Excuses, excuses...

Kurt Wedberg is one of the eastsiders out of Bishop, and he owns SMI (Sierra Mountaineering International). He completed -- I think -- his third ascent of Everest last year and has also done the 7 summits (and a bunch of other interesting peaks/trips)

There is a reason that this is a crazy thing to climb. Here is my photo from last year:

This must happen every Spring. Or maybe just whenever it feels like it...

Nice historical overview of the area via link. It helps for those of us who are continually challenged by cliffs, rocks, & waterfalls that all begin to look uniquely similar.White flag

An excellent view of Widows Tears can be seen from the small pullout on the north side of the
road JUST BEFORE Pohono Bridge (Northside/Southside Drive split).
Really nice. Check it out next time you drive into or out of the park.

I took a few. I'll post one later this week perhaps.
