Do you have a similar 3D photo for the trail up to Cloud Rest?

Thanks for the 2nd Photosynth. That one provides the best view of the higher altitude avenue from Echo Peaks (tree/talus section on far right) to the Matthes saddle. That's where I came over 3 years ago but could not see what was immediately ahead beyond the steep tree/talus area. The altitude headache didn't help either.

Hopefully you got the 3D goggles.

Here's Echo Ridge from near that Crest...

There has been talk of routes to Matthes Lakes... from up here... and there are a zillion...
all easy class 2 imo...
I stayed right next to the base this time... all the way to where the climbing routes start at the middle of the crest.
really nice... highly recommend...
But then again... it's all good baby. wink

Nope. Don't own any 3D goggles. Seriously. Every time I see a 3D post I hit Mark Read. Nothing personal.

Seriously, you really don't know what you're missing.

Many of these 3D anaglyphs are simply wonderful to view. Far better than many of the regular photos posted on this forum.

(And it's not like the 3D glasses cost an arm and a leg to own.)

Exactly. It may sound gimmicky... but it's just pretty darn tooting kewl.

Maybe Old Dood can post something... I finally just went and bought a set of glasses for the fart.

Thanks for posting the 3D photo of Cloud Rest and the link to the photosynth.

The clouds add a nice bit of mystery to the 3D photo of Cloud Rest (and what's not more appropriate than having clouds "resting" on Cloud Rest). smiling smiley

Co-sign. Will try to find a way up and over one of these sections, perhaps this summer. A guy I met last year (Evan) climbed/scrambled the entire crest w/o a rope (he rated it 5.7). Later saw him go up Cathedral, from the saddle/shoulder where you can overlook Buddy Lake, in 30 minutes. A few guys struggling up there with a rope, but he just bolted past them. Class 4-5 route.

Half Dome Fun

Is this the north end of the crest? how long would it take to get to here from the road, would it take any more/less time to get to the other side of the crest?
avatar Re: Matthes Crest in 3D for jim/tomdisco
May 27, 2013 01:28PM
Yes, you are looking at the north end of the crest from the saddle between Matthes Crest and Echo Ridge (between Echo peaks and Cockscomb. This is about a half day hike from Toulumne Meadows via the Budd Lake trail and over the eastern side of Echo Peaks. It would be a bit longer if you took the Cathedral trail, headed towards Echo lake, and then made the long slog up to the saddle.

Not sure what you mean by the other side of the crest. East-West? I would plan on a full day if you are headed down the east side of the saddle down to Matthes Lake. If you mean the other end of the crest in the photo then you're talking about the south end of Matthes which is very steep. That's where the low cut is where Matthes Lake drains towards Echo Canyon.

Yes, I was wondering if that photo was on the North or South end of the crest. Considering the traverse this August, have not looked at a ton of beta on it yet but i'm pretty sure the common route is south to north. Pretty much just want to know if it would be feasible to hike in, traverse the crest and hike out.

Looking at Andrew's pix it certainly looks like he went from N to S.
Just off the top of my noggin... I'm pretty sure the most done route is
from S to N... starting by going up the crest at the fist pix here:
http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,66415,66442#msg-66442

To get here you simply go trail ... to Cath Pass... and then simple
xcountry to Echo Lake and then up to start of climb. Within a few hours
you'd be climbing... so I would think it could be done in a day.
Maybe poke Andrew...
Can also take a look at Tuolumne climb book if you like...
Prolly loads on supertopo

When Tioga was open in Jan 2 Jans ago... dayhiked to Echo... skated it..
went back to Upper Cath... skated it... down to lower... skated it...
then climbed Medlicott and Mariuolumne dome... so... I would
think that traversing the crest do-able with long days and your skillz.

In Cath Pass... out Budd Lake

Have fun man
