Yosemite National Park held its fifth annual swift water demonstration day on Thursday, May 22nd. The event highlighted water safety and the unique dangers of spring runoff and swift water conditions in the park.

Members of the press were invited to cover the event and encouraged to interact with Yosemite Search and Rescue personnel to learn more about swift water rescue techniques. Members of the press had the opportunity to experience firsthand what it was like to participate in a recovery operation via highline over the Merced River. Reporters also had the opportunity to talk with experienced swift water rescuers about navigating water during real-life rescues and witnessed firsthand how Yosemite National Park rescuers navigate through the water. Park staff also discussed current water conditions in the park, the expected impact of the California drought, visitation expectations, and important safety tips while in the park.

The event was attended by representatives from three media outlets, 300 hundred visitors, and 50 NPS employees.
