I'm hearing from my son and cousin, through an InReach, that rangers are turning back hikers going south out of MTR due to the air quality because of smoke from the Rough Fire. I'm not certain if they talked with a ranger or heard from hikers who were turned around. They mention they have been told to exit over Piute Pass or down to Florence Lake. Anyone else have additional info? Would jumping back on the trail at Onion Valley be an option?

Gave a couple of them a ride from North Lake yesterday. They were aborting due to the smoke (and I don't blame them).

Apparently the fire crossed CA-180 and burned the Kings Canyon Lodge (where the 1920s gas pumps are).

I wonder if the lodge will be rebuilt.

I saw another article (on the site of some Fresno TV station) saying that the lodge was not insured. Unless they got it wrong, rebuilding seems like it might be difficult.

It would have been very hard to get insurance in that location.
