Bear Activity Summary: No new bear incidents were reported in the last few weeks, however, bears are still active throughout Yosemite including wilderness areas. We have had several observations reported to our office of bears along hiking trails. Remember to always keep food within arm’s reach while out hiking. Hungry or curious bears can appear out of nowhere and can easily destroy backpacks or damage property that is left sitting out with food. This time of year, bears are seeking out and eating up to four times their normal summer caloric intake to get ready for winter. This quest for food has bears roaming large distances. In the last two weeks a total of five bears have been hit by vehicles and were either injured or found dead. Please remember to always obey speed limits and to look out for wildlife along roadsides while driving.
If you see a bear during your visit please report it to the Save-A-Bear Hotline at 209-372-0322.
Red Bear, Dead Bear: So far this year, 33 bears have been hit by vehicles. Please protect wildlife by obeying speed limits and paying attention to roadsides while driving.
Interesting Bear Fact: Yosemite bears are currently in hyperphagia which is a period of excessive eating and drinking to fatten up for winter dormancy.
Other Wildlife Sightings: Mountain lions have been reportedly seen across all districts of Yosemite National Park this year.
