Bear Activity Summary: One bear incident occurred this week in a Wawona residential area. A bear walked onto the deck of a house, approached a window to investigate what was around, and ripped a screen. The resident was able to scare the bear off by yelling at it. As residents, it is important to understand that bears are highly active in the fall, and as natural food sources dwindle late in the season, bears may become bolder and seek easily obtainable human food that is stored improperly at homes.

If you see a bear or would like to report a food storage issue, please call the Save-A-Bear Hotline at 209-372-0322.

Red Bear, Dead Bear: So far this year, 34 bears have been hit by vehicles on all park roads. Please protect wildlife by obeying speed limits and paying attention to roadsides while driving.

Interesting Bear Fact: Black bear habitat historically ranged across the entire United States, but is now restricted (by human activity) to relatively undisturbed forested areas of North America.

Other Wildlife Sightings: Several mountain lions have been reported over the last few weeks including one that was reported in Curry Village.
