SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif. January 10, 2016– The Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park is now open. Following multiple days of storms with mudslides, rockslides, and falling trees, the parks’ road crews have worked to clean-up the highway. Visitors should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions as the next storm is expected this afternoon.
Tire chains or cables are required for both parks in order for visitors to see the giant sequoias as snow is falling in higher elevations. Visitors are able to access the giant sequoias. Potwisha Campground, Giant Forest Museum, General Sherman, and the Lodgepole area but some parking areas remain closed.
The road between the parks remains closed as part of the normal winter closure. Visitors cannot travel through Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks via the Generals Highway. Kings Canyon National Park remains open via Highway 180.
Rivers are expected are currently running very fast. Please don’t go near them. As the next storm arrives, temperatures and snow levels are expected to fall. Be prepared for winter travel.
