...Late Season Snow Over Northern Sierra and Lassen Park This
Weekend...

.A cool weather system will bring late season snow to the
mountains of northern California this weekend. Snow levels are
expected to drop to near 5000 feet late tonight into Sunday.
Although snow levels could be locally lower, the main snow
accumulations are expected above 5500 feet. There could be around
5-10 inches of snow across Lassen Park with 1-4 inches possible
over the Sierra. Motorists traveling across the Sierra on Sunday
should be prepared for winter driving conditions.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO
5 AM PDT MONDAY...

The National Weather Service in Sacramento has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for snow, which is in effect from midnight
tonight to 5 AM PDT Monday.

* MAIN IMPACTS...Slick roads may bring spin-outs and longer travel
times. Reduced visibility in heavier showers. Check with
CalTrans to see if chain controls are needed. Outdoor events and
recreation may be impacted.

* TIMING...Sunday

* LOCATIONS...Interstate 80 and Highway 50, Sierra campgrounds and
trails

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...1 to 4 inches possible above 5500 feet

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while
driving.

...Storm to Bring Winter-Like Conditions Back to the Region
Sunday...

A strong storm dropping into the region will bring back winter-like
conditions on Sunday with high temperatures as much as 25 degrees
below normal. With rain and snow showers along with breezy winds,
the temperatures will feel downright frigid for June, especially
in areas of overcast skies.

Overnight low temperatures in the Sierra could stay below
freezing for as many as 3 to 4 more nights. While most of the
lower valleys of western Nevada are not expected to experience
freezing early morning temperatures through Monday, lows in the
coldest valley will fall into the mid to upper 30s Monday morning.
Therefore, anyone with sensitive vegetation in the colder valleys
should take the necessary precautions.

Accumulating snow will be possible in the Sierra above 6000 feet
late Saturday night through Sunday night, with 2-4 inches of snow
possible in the higher elevations above 7000 feet. In northeast
California, 4-8 inches is possible above 6500 feet, with a couple
inches down to 5500 to 6000 feet. Mountains in western Nevada
could also see several inches of snow accumulation, with up to an
inch for locations such as the Virginia City highlands. With the
June sun angle, snow will melt off rapidly with impacts to mountain
passes likely to be short-lived or limited to the overnight hours.
However, even a short burst of accumulating snow can cause a
significant travel hazard, so slow down if you end up in any snow
showers.

Anyone planning outdoor activities through this weekend should be
prepared for cold temperatures, with the potential for accumulating
snow in the higher elevation and foothills during the overnight
hours.
