avatar Fire Crews Respond to Grant Fire
August 01, 2017 04:39PM
Fire crews are responding to the Grant Fire, located west of Highway 158 between Silver and Grant Lakes on the June Lake Loop. It is approximately 100 acres. It appears to be a lightning-caused fire that started yesterday evening. The fire is burning in in the sage in the lower elevations and pinyon/juniper and Jeffrey pine in the higher elevations. The fire burned actively throughout the night. The forest is ordering additional fire crews and air resources for aggressive suppression today. The focus will be on protecting the June Lake community with the effort focused on keeping the fire west of Highway 158 and north of the June Lake developments.

Highway 158 is closed between mile marker 8 and 9. However, please avoid the fire area to assist fire crews in their response.

The Grant Fire is 400 acres and 15% contained this morning. The change in acreage is due to better mapping. Fire behavior was minimal overnight.

Today, crews will improve existing containment lines and continue direct line construction to secure the south flank closest to the June Lake community as well as the eastern flank closest to Highway 158. Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) will be used where the fire has spread into the wilderness. Crews plan to tie into natural barriers to contain the fire in remote and steep locations.

Unseasonably hot temperatures as well as the potential for afternoon thunderstorms that could lead to erratic, gusty winds and bring additional lightning throughout the forest remain a concern for today.

Highway 158 is closed between mile marker 8 and 9. However, please avoid the fire area to assist fire crews in their response. The Parker Bench Trail, between the Parker Lake Trailhead and the Rush Creek Trailhead is closed. The Parker Lake and Rush Creek Trails remain open, but visitors should be prepared for smoky conditions.

There are no evacuations in place at this time.

Expect smoke from this fire to settle in June Lake at night under the inversion and for smoke to lift and disperse in the afternoon.

There are nine engines, four crews, three helicopters, and three air tankers assigned to the Grant Fire.

The fire is located west of Highway 158 between Silver and Grant Lakes on the June Lake Loop. The fire appears to be a lightning-caused fire that started the evening of July 31.
