A new fire, the South Fork Fire, has started in Wawona, south of Wawona Dome. The Chilnualna Falls trail is closed at the bottom and smoke is visible from the area and is expected to be significant overnight. The fire size is currently estimated to be 20 acres and the cause is unknown. Air resources are on scene and suppression operations are in progress.

A Hazard Alert Message is being issued for the Wawona community due to a nearby wildfire. It is currently at low threat potential that may require evacuation in 24 hours or more. Residents and visitors are encouraged to make appropriate pre-evacuation preparations.

The South Fork Fire is burning in the South Fork of the Merced River, 1 mile upstream from Swinging Bridge. It is on a south south-west aspect in steep, rocky, inaccessible terrain. The fire is burning in an area of heavy tree mortality due to bark beetle infestation and poor forest health. Due to the proximity of the community of Wawona, as well as the challenging terrain, the primary objective is firefighter and public safety.
