The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center in Mammoth Lakes has issued a
BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING:


* TIMING...In effect from Wed 6 PM PST to Fri 7 AM PST.

* AFFECTED AREA...The eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain
range between Virginia Lakes on the north to Bishop Creek on
the south.

* AVALANCHE DANGER...The avalanche danger for the warning area
will rise to HIGH tonight and will remain at HIGH thru tomorrow
and tomorrow night.

* REASON/IMPACTS...Heavy snow combined with wind will result in
widespread avalanching.

* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Very dangerous avalanche
conditions. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.
Avalanches may run long distances and can run into mature
forests, valley floors, or flat terrain.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM PST FRIDAY...
...BLIZZARD WARNING WILL EXPIRE AT 7 AM PST THIS MORNING ABOVE
7000 FEET...

* CHANGES...Blizzard Warning expired. No other changes.

* WHAT...Very heavy total snowfall accumulations of 3 to 7 feet
west of Highway 395 above 7000 feet. An Avalanche Warning is
also in effect through Friday morning. 1 to 2 feet elsewhere
above 7000 feet. Between 6000 and 7000 feet, 5 to 10 inches is
forecast. Winds gusting as high as 150 mph for ridge tops.

* WHERE...Mono County.

* WHEN...For the Winter Storm Warning, until 4 AM PST Friday. For
the Blizzard Warning, until 7 AM PST Thursday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult to
impossible with periods of very low visibility and road
closures possible. Winds along with heavy, wet snow could
cause areas of tree damage.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Avoid travel if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for
many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry
an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay
home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.

This is a life threatening situation, especially in the higher
elevations. Road crews and first responders may not be able to
rescue you. Stay indoors until the snow and wind subside. Even a
short walk could be deadly if you become disoriented.
