...Winter Storm Possible for Thanksgiving Week...

A potent winter storm is becoming more likely for Thanksgiving
Week. Heavy snow is probable for the Sierra starting late Tuesday
afternoon and through the day Wednesday. This is a cold storm and
will lower snow levels to all valley floors by Tuesday night with
accumulating snows possible.

Snow levels will fall to near 2000 feet by Tuesday night making
slick and snowy road conditions possible all the way from western
Nevada to the western foothills of the Sierra. Slow and difficult
travel conditions should be expected on late Tuesday into
Wednesday.

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is already one of the busiest
travel days of the year, and with heavy snow expected for the
Sierra and western Nevada, travel impacts will be significant.
Please plan your holiday travel accordingly. If you have travel
coming up next week, make sure to prepare your vehicle for winter
travel conditions.

THROUGH LATE THURSDAY NIGHT ABOVE 3000 FEET...

* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Several feet of snow in the Sierra
Nevada will be possible above 4,000 feet and the Kern County
Mountains above 6,000 feet. Accumulating snow possible down as
low as 3,000 feet.

* WHERE...Sierra Nevada and Kern County Mountains.

* WHEN...From midday Tuesday through late Thursday night.

* IMPACTS...Travel will likely be very difficult. The hazardous
conditions could impact holiday travels as well as commutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Significant reductions in visibilities are
possible. Downed trees and power outages possible.

FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3
feet with isolated amounts up to 4 feet feet possible. Winds
gusting as high as 65 mph.

* WHERE...Central Sierra, North Kings River and Sequoia Kings
Counties.

* WHEN...From 4 PM Tuesday to 4 AM PST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Slick, snow-covered roads and potentially dangerous
and treacherous driving conditions along with possible travel
delays and road closures. Blowing and drifting snow and local
whiteout conditions likely over the higher elevations of the
Sierra along with sub zero wind chill temperatures.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Significant reductions in visibilities are
possible. Downed trees and power outages possible.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in
your vehicle in case of an emergency.

...WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM TO 6 PM PST MONDAY...

* WHAT...Northwest winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
Gusts could reach 55 mph in wind prone locations along US-395
south of Mammoth-Yosemite Airport, through the Chalfant Valley,
and along US-6 near Benton.

* WHERE...Mono County.

* WHEN...From 9 AM to 6 PM PST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects.
Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may
result.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The winds will briefly combine with dry
conditions bringing fire concerns. Please be careful not to
create a spark.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio
furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds
increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do
is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and
water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in
the event of a power outage.
